ENEMY WITHIN Review by Jean Currie Rachel Spaulding has always known that she was adopted, but she has been treated as one of the family by all its members - except her bitter, jealous sister Annie. After their parents die, the two girls continue to live and work with their grandmother, but when she too dies, trouble begins. Rachel is delighted to find she has inherited the wine business she loves, but Annie is not content with her legacy and considers she has been cheated out of what should be hers. In order to bring disgrace on Rachel and thereby wrest ownership from her, Annie employs Gregory to look into Rachel's past and ancestry. What he finds sets balls rolling in all directions and stirs up trouble for more than Rachel. This is not a straightforward whodunit with a sleuth seeking a murderer. There are twists and turns of plot and subplots, murders, attempted murders, violence and a little sex to add spice to the mixture. This romantic suspense mystery is set in California among the rich vineyards and walnut groves, with families set against each other and individual members fighting between themselves -- 'the enemy you least suspect is the enemy within' to quote the cover. A good page turner. |
